Sometimes I get nostalgic. I moved a lot in my life, an average of once every two years. I went to ten schools in thirteen years (K-12), and the one thing that was a constant was music. Music and TV. The two things that were constant were music and TV. And family. The three…three things that were constant were music, TV, family and the ever increasing amount of sarcasm that made it into my humor.

I made it down for the weekly KFJC (http://kfjc.org) staff meeting this past week, for the first time in about seven years. I’m hoping to do a show a month there. I’ll keep you posted.

With that I bring you this latest episode. If you’re a fan of nighttime police dramas, then you’ll enjoy this show.

Also, I recently saw Radio Moscow play 12 Galaxies in SF (http://www.12galaxies.com/flash.html). Check out their MySpace page, and support live music. I also have a few San Francisco artists in this show, including punk polka faves Polkacide, the Japanese yodeling cowboy Toshio Hirano, and Sesame Street cover band Cookie Mongoloid; you’ve never heard anything like them before.
A Season In Hell #12: Waiting for the Man

***Warning*** Because of the need for server space, I will be removing Episode #1 and possibly #2 by Thursday, August 2nd, 2007. You have been warned.

I spent a year in DC last week. I was there for an education conference, and I had the luxury of seeing the New York Dolls perform at the legendary 9:30 Club. The club has been open since the 70’s, but obviously in a very different location. What a great club; amazing sound and stage. The Dolls were incredible too. Only Sylvain and Johanson are alive from the original lineup, but the rest of the band seriously kicked ass. They have a new CD out, go get it.

I got to walk “The Mall”, which is the federal gov’t area. Quite impressive, even if you don’t like the schmuck who lives in the white house right now.

This week I include some early NY Dolls. I also have some live tracks from Tom Waits with the Kronos Quartet doing the theme to my favorite show: “The Wire”. If you haven’t seen this great police drama on HBO, you’re missing the best written show on TV. Some live Lou Reed shows up near the end of the podcast today. A real rarity is included in the guise of Neil Young. He never released “Chrome Dreams”, but all of the music made it on to something eventually. This version of “Powderfinger” never did.

I hope you enjoy the show. Please leave a comment on the website: http://johnhell.podomatic.com and tell your friends about thee show by clicking the “send to friends” link on the page.

Thanks.

Note to Permalist Exchangers: We'll start permalisting after we speed up a bit.

One last option. It is quite possible that, due to our small gene pool so far, we may get someone that we've had before. It this happens, then just consider it an update, and give all new music! On the flipside, if you want to include in your email people from whom you've already received stuff, then I can try to accomodatingly get someone new into your collection.
As always, you will send in your address, tribe name, real name, and bowling average (shoe size? favorite reptile?) Then, in a week, you'll get someone else's names & address, and send out your CD. In the mail comes a specially made CD for you from a fellow tribe member. Pretty sweet, eh?

Is it mandatory to make fancy covers for these CDs? I see in the gallery that there are some pretty fancy ones, and I'm not sure I'm that savvy. Of course I'd send along a track listing and a few notes about my selections, but as far as a sized inlay card, I dunno.

Also, do those of you folks that have been involved in several trades make totally different mixes for each trade, or do you have one mix that you send out, maybe making a few changes on each depending on the recipient's tastes?
I am starting my new job in 2 weeks. I have to drive down to LA early in the morning (3 hrs.) to meet up with my brother so that we can go apartment hunting. I need to find a place to live this weekend if I don't want to crash on my brother's couch. I was already really stressed before the job change...mainly why I have a new job now. ;-) In addition, my dad got offered an executive position at Peavey (they make amps and speakers, etc.) but it's in Mississippi!!! I have been living with my parents since September and we are very close. My mom has been sick for more than a few years now and is pretty much on pain meds all day long every day. I was kinda helping out. So, I cannot believe they will be more than a 3 hour drive away. So everything is overwhelming me at the moment.
I hope it's OK that we skip this month's trade. I am really sorry. I **love** doing this tribe and I promise to make a fresh start in January. I wish everyone Happy Holidays! I am thankful to have so many people interested in this tribe.

Anyone go out and buy albums by bands they heard on their cd exchnage mixes? I rarely see reviews and never have time to post one myself anymore so I wanted to see if the tribe was working as I had hoped. Would love to hear everyone's thoughts.

I apologize I haven't been around as much as I used to be... Times are tough and I try to surround myself with people instead of 4 walls and my computer.. so I am not home very much.

Not stuff that I have listened to, so I can't really say which bands/artists I've heard... most of them I haven't (except for Fucking Champs, Vernon Reid, New Pornographers... not going to list them all). The brilliant jazz, to hip-hop, en route to the marching band (Yay!!!) transitions are the most obviously brilliant ones so far. There's nothing on this that I don't enjoy and IT'S AMAZING! Thank you so much. Clever transitions. A definite check plus. :)

I am updating my CD Exchange Tribe database. I am basically starting from scratch, so here's what I need:

1. Tribe Name
2. Real name
3. Mailing address
4. Link to your Tribe profile (this way people don't confuse all same-named members and direct access to your profile for the person making your cd)
5. Please let me know whether or not you want to on the permanent exchange list
6. E-mail address

REMINDER! If any of your info above changes, please let me know...especially if you change your tribe name.

email me the info--- no13baby@sbcglobal.net

I guess this is the perfect way to weed out those who don't participate....

I didn't give any warning but I figure it has been discussed enough that I shouldn't have to announce it. I just don't have the time. IN updating my master list, I noticed that over 20 people left and never said goodbye. In fact, I only ever had one person email me to say he was leaving the tribe and I could remove him from the list.
are you guys passing mp3 cd's or audio?

you can fit 5 times more info on the cd if you burn it
as an mp3... that means 5 times as many bands and
songs.

the other thing i would like to suggest is that if you have
AIM (instant messaging) you can send music through that.
this would bypass the posting of your personal info (address)
paying for postage and burning the cd and most importantly
the energy it takes to mail it... it is an anti-procrastination
approach... cause i know i have a cd over here that i burned
a loooooong time ago for someone and it still has not been sent.
if you use instant messaging drop me a line and a song or two.

I'd love to see more reviews but at the very least, can everyone please make it a practice to send the maker of your CD a message via Tribe? Everyone puts a lot of time and effort into these and not knowing whether the CDs are being received is kinda lame! It is the least you can do for the person who spent their free time to make you (a stranger) a CD. Thank you!

One other thing... if you sign up to participate, you are given a 20-day period in which to mail the CD. PLEASE send it by that 20th day. That is a long period of time and it seems a lot of people aren't doing their CDs until the last minute or not at all. (Although, we have had more than a few get lost in the mail.) If you haven't sent it and I am contacted by the receipient, expect an email from me. If you *do* get an email from me and you have sent the CD, don't get upset. I have no way of knowing if it's been sent. I know things happen and sometimes you may have to send it late. I know some things get lost in the mail. It is part of my job as the moderator to trace the CDs. Don't get mad! It seems I have been upsetting a few of you that I have emailed recently. I'm just doing my 'job'. To avoid this, you can always contact your receipient via Tribe and tell them it's on its way. I usually do that so they know to look for a CD in the mail. Just a CYA/suggestion.

PLEASE post your comments and suggestions...or email me privately if ya need!

By Joab Jackson, GCN Staff

Optical disks might not last as long as you would expect—or hope

Don’t be mistaken: Optical disks won’t last forever.

Many users think the disks are indestructible, but they are wrong, said Fred Byers, an IT specialist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology.

As the government saves more and more records in electronic format, long-term archiving becomes a puzzle. Paper has lasted for centuries. Can optical disks really last for the 100-year life span envisioned for them?

The good news from NIST is that certain types of optical disks might last that long or even double that—but only if handled with care.

But disk life expectancy depends on many factors, some controllable by users, others not, Byers noted in a disk care guide, NIST Special Publication 500-252.

The National Archives and Records Administration requested the report, asking NIST to come up with care and handling instructions for optical media. The goal was to imitate a report about magnetic tape care created by the now-defunct National Media Laboratory. Byers said he spent about a year testing disks and working on the guide.

Although many agencies have no archiving policy, they nonetheless are saving a lot of data on optical disks. “There are a lot of questions about the implications of that,” Byers said.

Recordable CDs and DVDs can be as reliable as magnetic tape for backup, he said, and they read much faster because they use random access, whereas users must search files stored on tape sequentially.

The useful life span of optical disks varies with temperature, humidity and day-to-day use. Data degradation at first can go unnoticed because of the error-correcting abilities of disk readers.

NIST has found that recordable disks seem to last much longer than rewritable disks, Byers said, and even longer than manufactured disks such as CDs for installing commercial software.

General industry guidelines now estimate office-burned copies of CDs and DVDs could remain readable for 100 to 200 years.

A disk burner records information by laser-heating a dye inside the disk. Over time the dye fades, rendering the information difficult to read. The disk’s reflective layer, which sends information back to a photosensor during reading, is also subject to degradation.

The reflective layer is usually of thin gold, silver or silver alloy. Gold does not corrode, though gold-coated disks are expensive. Silver corrodes when exposed to air pollutants such as sulfur. Most silver-coated disks use alloys to inhibit corrosion.

Rewritable CDs and DVDs have a shorter life span of about 25 years, so Byers said he does not recommend them for archiving.

A rewritable disk’s metal-alloy data layer is less stable than that in write-once disks. And rewritable disks are affected by light, so they also have a limited number of reads—a number that’s still uncertain.

Surprisingly, premanufactured CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs may not last as long as recordable disks, Byers said. Surprisingly, premanufactured CD-ROMs and DVD-ROMs may not last as long as recordable disks, Byers said.

Most industry estimates place the life span of professionally produced optical disks somewhere between 20 and 100 years. But the weakness of the ROM disks stems largely from their aluminum reflective layer, Byers said.

When exposed to humidity and atmospheric oxygen through scratches, cracks or delaminated areas in the label, the aluminum breaks down.

Byers warned that all the life spans are rough estimates. A hurried burn or a change in manufacturing technique could cause premature failure.

He advised agencies to consider the longevity of their current storage media and always be developing migration strategies to a new one.

“These days, the rate of change in technology is so much faster,” Byers said. “I’m convinced there will be a new storage technology within 10 years.”

I got my CD yesterday from Dan, so I thought I'd post a quick review of his "Afterburn" cd mix.

Dan, it looks like you put some good effort into this mix not only in content but in appearance. The custom cover and cd label looks very nice.

Now about the tracks. Overall I really enjoyed your selections. First off, you really can't go wrong with Tom Jones remixes. (Just in case you haven't heard of it, I recommend Tom Jones w/ Portishead singing "Motherless Child".) The tracks from Erasure & SneakerPimps bringback sounds I haven't heard in a while, while the ambiant & trance selections are an added delight for a night-time drive. Finally I end this review with 2 excellent words: Peter Gabriel.

Cheers!
